It's no secret that we love animals. You only need to look at our family album to see that our children are dogs. No, they are not ugly, but dogs, real dogs. Anyway, to add a few karma points to our spiritual resume, we, along with Wilson and Mary Ellen Godfrey, and other Mazatlan residents, got together and formed the Amigos de los Animales back in the 90's. When we first started out, we sought out various local veterinarians who would provide us with reduced rates to treat, euthanize, and spay and neuter animals. But the problem of not having a central location where people could either leave animals that they couldn't care for, or go to in order to adopt an animal and give it a home was a continuing problem. We finally saved up enough money to buy a dilapidated building and turn it into an animal shelter. A few years later we were able to hire a full time veterinarian who provides us with all of our medical services. You can see him proudly posing in front of our garage door. One of the things we strongly believe in is full disclosure. We try to put all of our documents, thoughts, announcements, and board meeting minutes online at the Amigos de los Animales kwiki. We have also expanded our mission recently to include education. As part of this effort we held a pancake breakfast with Santa during Christmas time, where each child participating could enter a contest to win a bicycle by writing the best essay about how to treat animals. We also send volunteers to various local schools, distributing coloring books that try to teach the little ones how to be kind to animals. Speaking of volunteers, we need them, lots of them, and all the time. There is always more to do at the animal shelter than there is time to do it. We need people to bathe and groom the dogs, take them for walks, or just hang out with them and make them feel loved. No amount of time you can spare is too small, and your reward will be knowing that you've made the world a little happier place. If you don't have time to spend with the little critters, you can always spend some money. The Amigos de los Animales is a US charitable organization, so your contributions are tax deductible from your US taxes. So far we have received no local government financial support. That's zero, nada, nothing ... so we count on nice people like you to keep our doors open. Our expenses run at about $2000-$2500 USD per month, in case you're wondering, so again, please give generously if you can.

Please Adopt Me!

Now the space below is reserved for our Pet of the Week program. Each week (more or less) we will feature a dog or cat that needs a new home, and is ready to give his or her new owner all the love and attention that he or she deserves.
Sorry, this little guy is not up for adoption. I've just put him here until we get our act together and start posting photos and bios of dogs that are available at the shelter. But since he's here, I might as well tell you about him. When we found him, he was all skin and bones, and weighed less than five pounds. He has since beefed up, and besides having the best ears of any dog we've ever seen, he has one of the best personalities too. He will entertain himself for hours by getting a ball, taking it to the top of the bed, dropping it and chasing it. Repeat, repeat, ... repeat. He is also incredibly fast, and can almost run as fast as our Italian greyhounds.
